POISON IVY
Poison ivy is a common sight at Wasaga Beach Provincial Park and is located in many different areas. This is one reason it is important to remain on park trails, keep your pets on a leach, and be aware of what this plant looks like and where it grows. Poison ivy prefers to grow in sandy areas where there is plenty of sun - a common occurrence at the beach! Characteristics of the plant at Wasaga Beach are: three leaves with a longer stem on the middle leaf, ground dwelling, and greenish-white berries in late summer. This plant contains a chemical that can cause an allergic reaction if a person comes in contact with the leaves; however, each individual reacts differently. If you think you have come in contact with this plant, it is recommended that you thoroughly wash these areas with soap and warm water at the earliest convenience. Please note that oil from the plant will remain on clothing, footwear, and pets and can be transferred to skin.
